Digital image correlation analysis of interfacial debonding properties and fracture behavior in concrete
2007
The use of digital image correlation (DIC) as a fracture mechanics tool is described, for two projects currently underway. The goal of the first project is to examine the bond between carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) and concrete substrates. The second project involves the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) of plain concrete, and the softening and fracture behavior of this region. For both projects, DIC allows for precise measurement of the surface displacements of the deforming materials. The resulting strain data are higher in resolution than is possible with other experimental techniques. For both projects, the DIC results are being used to determine bond constitutive laws, which w…
Surface Integrity
2008
This chapter provides comprehensive knowledge regarding the state and properties of both surface and subsurface layers generated during machining processes, including different associated mechanical and thermal influences. Basic models of the superficial layer and factors effecting surface integrity are presented. Decomposition of surface topography into roughness, waviness and form along with appropriate filtering methods is outlined. The characterization of surface roughness based on 2D and 3D roughness parameters as well as motif, fractal and frequency characteristics are presented. In particular, all standardized areal surface parameters are specified, and practical examples are provide…
Geometric quality and appearance of surfaces : local and global approaches
2012
Accounting for customers' perception of manufactured goods has become a major challenge for the industry. This process is to be established from early design to retail. Customers are nowadays more aware and detail oriented about perceived quality of products. This allows one to set not only an estimated price but also the expected quality of the product. Surface appearance analysis has therefore become a key industrial issue. Two approaches are proposed here to formalize the detection methodology and provide objective criteria for experts to evaluate surface anomalies. The first proposed approach is based on surface metrology. It consists in analyzing the measured topologies in order to bin…
The infrared thermography control of the laser welding of amorphous polymers
2008
In laser welding technique, a real-time control of temperature distribution inside the irradiated materials is essential when attempting to optimize the process. For all laser welding methods that operate by the transmission principle, the difficulty of recording the developed temperature at the interface derives from the fact that materials to be welded are in contact throughout the entire process. In the present study, in order to overcome this issue, a contact-free method such the infrared thermography is used for surface temperature measurement. Corroborating this data with a numerical simulation of the temperature field evolution inside the components, an assessment of optimal process …
